A police officer was killed in a brief shootout at Gund Dachin area of Bandipora in north Kashmir on Wednesday.

Official sources told Srinagar based newsgathering agency GNS that a special police team from Rajbagh Srinagar were travelling in a car and were chasing militants in the district.

On reaching Gund Dachin in the district, the police team opened fire and tried to intercept the militant vehicle. However, the militants retaliated ensued a brief shootout.

In the firing incident, an Inspector of police identified as Altaf Ahmad sustained serious bullet injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment where from he was removed to army’s 92 base hospital here in Srinagar.

However, injured officer later succumbed to injuries in military hospital here.

The slain police officer heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) Rajbagh, Srinagar to investigate the militancy related cases.

The militants reportedly, fled from the scene, they said.

Meanwhile, a police officer while confirming the incident said that the militants travelling in the vehicle also included LeT commander Abu Qasim.

Soon after the incident, SOG, army and CRPF cordoned off the whole area and launched massive hunt to nab the militants.
