The students of BSc Nursing at Government Medical College, Srinagar staged a protest sit-in at Srinagar’s Pratap Park Monday against the hefty fee structure of their course.

“Our fee structure has not yet been declared by the government and as per the new notification, we have been asked to submit a fee of Rs 23,400 which is very large amount,” the students told Kashmir Life.

The students said that fee structure at SKIMS for the same course is only Rs 2500 and besides this, they get a monthly stipend of Rs 500.

“Most students in our class come from poor families. How can we furnish such a large amount?” students asked.

Adding to their misery, most of these students have cancelled their admission at other nursing colleges like Bibi Halima College, to get enrolled at GMC hoping that the college would charge less.

“I thought the admission to this college would come as a reprieve but it only worsened my problems. We are not that financially sound that we can shell out a fee of this amount,” said a student.

The students said that fee for candidates pursuing MBBS in their collage is just Rs 10, 000.

The students also complained about the lack of proper facilities at the college. “There is no hostel for us,” they alleged. “This is supposed to be a training course, yet we don’t have any laboratory.”

The students also complained about the uncleanliness of classrooms. “Post floods, no proper cleaning of our classrooms have taken place. They look dilapidated and mucky. No one comes to dust our classrooms.”

Kashmir Life reached the office of Principal/Dean of the GMC who was not available for the comment.
