Stressing for the need of rising above the party lines and working in Unison for the “national interest”, Peoples Democratic Part North Kashmir Lok Sabha member, Muzaffar Hussain Baig, on Sunday said politicians “must not” create hurdles “in making nation a prosperous one”.

Speaking during a function organized by Pahari Cultural and Welfare Forum, Baig said, “if Government of India can accord schedule tribe status to Gujjars then why same is not being done in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.”

“People living in the mountainous regions of the state can unite for the better common good and no one should object to such a positive development,” he said.

The PDP veteran maintained that the ruling parties keep changing in the state “but nations don’t and that is why the political parties must rise above the political differences and work for a common goal that is to usher development and prosperity in the society”.

Baig expressed hope that chief minister Ms Mehbooba Mufti will send file related to the betterment of Gujjars to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon.

“Modi has a gracious heart and I am hopeful that he will not say no to the proposal. It is unfortunate that we live in such an environment where no one has the ability to understand our hardships,” Baig said.

The Lawmaker maintained that history bears testimony to the fact that among the first races that settled in the state are Pahari people.

Thanking the people for electing him as a patron for the Pahari Forum, he said, “the responsibility given to me is of immense importance but the real objective will be achieved when all the Pahari people unite and strive for the one common role.”
