To commemorate 22nd death anniversary of South Kashmir Mirwaiz, Dr Qazi Nisar Ahmad, Islamabad district observed complete shutdown on Sunday.
Business establishments, shops remained closed while some private vehicles plied on the roads. Heavy contingent of police and paramilitary forces were deployed in the town.
Founder of Ummat-e-Islami, Qazi Nisar rose to fame when he slaughtered sheep in Islamabad’s Lal Chowk during Governor Jagmohan’s first stint in J&K. Jagmohan had banned sale and consumption of meat on Janamashthami.
He was assassinated by unidentified gunmen in Bona Dialgam village some five kilometers from town, on this day in 1994.
Meanwhile, his son and current Mirwaiz South Kashmir, Qazi Yasir was arrested on Friday by police while he was addressing a press conference in which he called people to boycott the upcoming By-Polls of the assembly segment on June 22, 2016.
The Islamabad By-polls were earlier deferred by two days as the day coincided with Qazi Nisar’s death anniversary.
According to members of Ummat-e-Islami, due to the restrictions by administration, rally from Hanfia Masjid to the assignation sight could not be held.
“However, some people managed to reach Hanfia Jamia Masjid and held a program denouncing the restrictions put by the forces on the separatists and not allowing them to speak,” said a party member.
Meanwhile, to break the restrictions, stone pelting incidents were reported from the old town areas including, Malakhnag, Hazratbal, Cheeni chowk and Kha bazaar.
People of the Mohalla Shah Sahab also accused forces of breaking window panes in their houses.
