Jammu and Kashmir Government banned people from marching towards historic Jamia Masjid on Friday as united resistance leadership had called for march towards Nowhatta today.
Strict curfew is in place today to thwart any move towards besieged Jamia Masjid in Old Srinagar.
The move comes in the wake when at least 52 civilians have been killed by forces since July 09, a day after popular militant commander Burhan Wani was killed in Kokernag area of South Kashmir on July 08 evening.
Kashmir is witnessing mass civil uprising since then and thousands of people have been injured in forces action while hundreds of youths have been arrested.
Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani had asked people to assemble at Tehreek-e-Hurriyat headquarter at Hyderpora today at 11 AM to start march towards Jamia Masjid today. However, people were banned from moving out of their homes.
There has been no major prayer meeting in Jamia Masjid since Burhan Wani was killed.
Geelani, who has been banned from moving out of his home, tried to march towards Jamia Masjid around noon today but was bundled in a police van and shifted to Humhama Police Station.
On the other hand, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who too has been barred from moving out of his home, walked out of his Nigeen residence at 1 PM when police swung in to action and whisked him away to Police Station.
This is third time that Geelani and Mirwaiz have been arrested by police when they tried to take out peaceful protest marches. Earlier, government foiled Islamabad and Kulgam Marches.
