SRINAGAR

Intense clashes erupted in North Kashmir’s Palhallan town on Friday soon after mandatory congregational Friday prayers ended.

Local reports said people offered Friday prayers in their respective Jamia Masjids today.

“Announcements were made in all Masjids that a peaceful march towards Srinagar-Muzaffarabad will be taken out,” report said.

As people started march, the reports added, forces including police and CRPF men came in vehicles towards Government Higher Secondary School. “The men in uniform started shelling tear gas canisters and stone pelting started,” they said.

“The clashes spread and people have fled to nearby orchards,” local sources said. The clashes were going on when last reports came in.

Meanwhile, reports said that tear gas canisters were fired towards protestors at Lawaypora on Srinagar-Muzaffarbad in Srinagar outskirts when people rose up on protests after Friday prayers.

The joint resistance leadership had asked people to march towards Jamia Masjid Srinagar today to “break the military siege around it”.

However, curfew was imposed in Srinagar parts to prevent people from marching towards it.
