Kashmir Editors Guild (KEG) Wednesday expressed serious concern over the continued ban on the publication of Srinagar based newspaper the Kashmir Reader.

Notably, Kashmir Reader was banned from publication on October 2 evening.

In a meeting held here today, a statement issued by KEG said that KEG reiterated that the ban on Kashmir Reader is against the basic spirit of democracy as well as the freedom of press.

“The banning of the newspaper is vague and the government is still unclear about the charges that have been levelled against the organization,” the KEG felt.

The ban order, issued by District Magistrate Srinagar, was handed over to the printer and publisher of Kashmir Reader on October 02, 2016 evening which read “content published by Kashmir Reader can incite violence”.

“It is tragic that even the dossier that the government has reportedly framed against the organization has not been handed over to it,” the KEG observed.

Today, it was 24th consecutive day that Kashmir Reader did not hit market. A 12-page broadsheet, Kashmir Reader first came in market on May 15, 2016.

The KEG and various other journalists’ forums have from time to time taken up the issue of ban imposed on Kashmir Reader at various levels with the government, the meeting was informed. “It was also felt that the KEG will continue with its efforts of seeking the revocation of the ban at an earliest,” the statement said

The Editors Guild vehemently impressed upon the government to revoke the ban order immediately as the order in itself goes against the basic democratic principles, the statement added.
