All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) Chairperson, Syed Ali Geelani, on Sunday rejected the statement of former chief minister Omar Abdullah, which he made in an event in New York, United States.

“His assertions about Kashmir issue are baseless, far from historical perspective and carry no weight,” Hurriyat patriarch Geelani said.

Omar had stated that the resolution of Kashmir dispute is “possible within ambit of Indian constitution”.

Geelani while taking dig at NC politicians said, “they ignored the martyrs of 1931, converted Muslim Conference into National Conference and thus opted to follow footsteps of Indian Nation Congress.”

In a statement issued this evening, Geelani while referring to recent Kashmir history, said, “late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah though for 22 years pursued Plebiscite Front but later in year 1975 while ignoring the miseries and agonies faced by people, opted to choose his fortune for power corridors with in frame work of Indira-Abdullah Accord. This was followed by his son and grandson and thus bargained the state interests for their personal gains.”

The ailing octogenarian Hurriyat Conference chairperson said, “despite their bargaining with, Delhi the people in J&K never accepted hegemony of India and resisted it with their will and wish.”

“Kashmir issue is internationally accepted dispute and its solution is never possible with in frame work of Indian constitution,” he added.

Referring to Indian leadership, Geelani said that they have pledged to solve the issue as per aspirations of people of state and even their commitment is on record with international bodies, UN assembly and Pakistan.

He said that in 1948, the first prime minister of India Pandith Jawahar Lal Nehru raised the issue in UN assembly and on 31st October 1947 addressed a telegram to Prime Minister of Pakistan Liyaqat Ali Khan, wherein he accepted that after resuming the peace in state they will call back their forces and allow people to exercise their aspiration about their political destiny.

Late Pandith Nehru had pledged that it is their commitment with world and people of state and this was accorded in Security council and both India and Pakistan were signatory to these resolutions, APHC chairperson further said.

The Hurriyat Conference Chairperson while referring to resolution passed on 5th January 1949 in UN Security Council said that both Pakistan and India agreed that the future about Kashmir need to be ascertained through democratic, free and fair plebiscite.

Terming the statement of Omar Abdullah as “childish and irrelevant” wherein he had said that Pakistan “will create hurdles” in plebiscite, Geelani said, “Pakistan from day first is pleading the case for referendum for whole state including Gilgit and Baltistan.”

“Pakistan has always held UN resolutions and instead it is India which has always adopted delaying tactics and created hurdles in its lasting and peaceful solution,” said Geelani.

Geelani asked Omer Abdullah that “if India is ready to fulfil its promise then we will ask Pakistan to withdraw its forces from Pakistan administered Kashmir (PaK) and hold referendum  as per UN charter.”

“We ask both countries to allow people from all parts of Kashmir to express their aspiration about the political future, so that the resources incurred on arms and ammunitions are spent for people’s welfare,” Geelani asserted.

“Since 1947, we have given enormous sacrifices,” the pro-freedom patriarch said, “and in October and November 1947, five lakh innocent people in Jammu were brutally massacred and since then the resistance movement is presenting cherished sacrifice.”

Referring to current people’s uprising, the Hurriyat Conference Chairperson said, “it is follow-up of same mission of freedom and people should be allowed to express their wish with regards to their political destiny.”

Geelani said, “more than hundred innocents fell to bullets, 15 thousand injured, more than one thousand blinded, property worth millions ransacked, thousands arrested and PSA slapped, harassment and intimidation, crackdown has become the order of the day.”

He expressed his sorrow that when “whole nation” is in miserable condition, facing hardships and agony and despite all this “the pro-Indian politicians are playing with the sentiments of miffed people and playing the tune of their masters about self-rule and Indian constitution”.

  1. 1st thing You need to define geography of Kashmir and who are Kashmiri . The people whom you mentioned here are not kashmiri alone. Like many journalist you promoting valley of Kashmir as Kashmir. Please correct yourself. Kashmir is very large region and problem what you referring here is just 20% of whole Kashmir. People living in valley have right to live without interference of government. It is a mistrust between people living in Valley and government what is the root of problem in Kashmir valley. This mistrust is artificially generated . This mistrust grown up at high pace as people of valley started thinking that they way People of Valley treated other parts of India never treated like that way. It is a psychological problem. It can be solved if equal number of non-Kashmiri people are allowed to live along with People of Kashmi Valley

If there is 5 million people living in valley , then bring 5 million people from other parts of India and let them live side by side with people of valley for 5 year . The doubt / mistrust will go forever. People of valley will understand they is no difference between people of other parts of India and people of Valley.

I think Gilani Sb. might just be hitting the right note eventually…The road to freedom for the Valley runs through Muzaffarabad and not Delhi or Islamabad.
