Dozens of men in uniform have cordoned the residence-cum-office of Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani since Saturday morning.
All Parties Hurriyat Conference chief, Geelani, was scheduled to address people at 11 AM today.
“The road leading to the residence at Rehmat Abad Hyderpora from Airport Road has been sealed with barbed wires,” eye witnesses said. “Scores of forces vehicles and men in uniform have been deployed and no one is being allowed to move towards Rehmat Abad.”
Reports said even family of ailing Geelani has been barred from meeting him.
“Police, CRPF and scores of CID and police officers are manning the street leading to residence of Geelani,” they said, “even jammers have been installed outside the residence of Geelani.”
One office bearer of Geelani led Tehreek-e-Hurriyat said, “I haven’t seen such cordon and total clampdown (on Syed Ali Geelani) in past.”
He said that forces started cordoned the residence of Geelani around 7 AM. In its joint statement on Oct 19, 2016, the joint resistance leadership had announced that Geelani would “address nation” today (Oct 22, 2016) at 11 AM.
Speaking to Kashmir Life, Geelani’s younger son, Naseem Geelani said, “I was on way to meet my ailing father this morning but cops stopped me.”
“Some Dy SP who was sitting in a police van categorically told me to return as I won’t be allowed to meet my dad – Geelani,” he said.
Naseem questioned the action of the police. “What kind of justice is this as not to allow son to meet his father?” he asked.
Geelani is under continuous house detention ever since he returned from New Delhi early this year. Government has placed two big police and CRPF vehicles outside his residence.
