SRINAGAR: The New Greenland Educational Institute, Sumbal cricket team trounced the Govt. Higher Secondary School, Zainapora Shopian team in the final match of the Junior Cricket Championship U-17. A joint initiative of Delhi Public School, Srinagar and J&K State Sports Council, the final match was played in DPS playground the past weekend.

The Championship was the first of its kind sports event that witnessed participation of 320 teams comprising of 4800 students from Kashmir’s all the 10 districts. A record 319 matches were conducted throughout the tournament in various districts of Kashmir, over a period of 3 months.

Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti drove to DPS to watch the finals. She interacted with a group of students of the school and watched the match. IT and Youth Services & Sports minister, Moulvi Imran Raza Ansari also watched the match. He awarded the winning team and the runner up teams with trophies and cash prizes.

Championship winners, the New Greenland Educational Institute, Sumbal, Bandipora was awarded a cash prize of Rs 1,00,000, and the runner up team, Government Higher Secondary School, Zainpora Shopian, got a cash prize of Rs 50,000. Third position team, the Dr AGM’s City School, Nowgam Srinagar, was given Rs 25,000. The man of the match and man of the series were also rewarded. Participation certificates were given to all the participating players. The coordinators of the event were also given appreciation certificates.

A DPS spokesman said the final match was watched by a record of 7000 students and participants from different schools.
