Clashes between protesting students and government forces erupted in Shopian town of south Kashmir on Wednesday.

As per school sources, “Hundreds of students of government Boy’s Higher Secondary School Shopian, boycotted their classes and were protesting inside the campus.” But large contingent of police was already placed at the main entrance of the school.

“When students started raising pro-freedom and anti-India slogans, it triggered clashes,” he said.

But the police sources said the protesting students, were marching towards main market where they pelted stones on police personnel who retaliated with tear gas shelling resulting in chaos in the area.

“Protesting students pelted stones on the residential quarter of the Deputy Commissioner situated few hundred meters away from the school,” said Tahir Saleem, SP Shopian to Kashmir Life’ local reporter.

Reportedly most of the market in the south Kashmir town was closed due to intense clashes which were going on when reports last came in.

Meanwhile, the students of Government Degree College Bijbehara, in Islamabad district also held protests against alleged force’s highhandedness for some time however they dispersed peacefully.

Student protests are order of the day in Kashmir ever since at least 60 students were injured in force’s action at Pulwama on April 15.
