For the first time in last 20 years ever since the eruption of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir, the Barsoo area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district witnessed brisk polling on Tuesday. The area according to locals always boycotted the poll process but this time the situation was different as people came out in large numbers to vote for a party that could make Central University functional in the district.
“I voted for the party that recently promised us that Central University would be made functional soon after it (party) assumes power,” an elderly farmer of Barsoo Ganderbal, Muhammad Abdullah told CNS
“It was in 2009 when the process of land acquisition for the Central University of Kashmir was started in Ganderbal, but almost five years passed and the construction work is still going on with a snails speed,” said a youth who voted for a change and with a hope that next government in the state would make the Central University functional.
Another voter from Barsoo who was standing in a queue at a polling station told CNS that, “since the government did not provide us any employment as promised and did not made the University functional so they decided to get back to their farms on the land that they had provided to government,” he said.
The people of Barsoo Ganderbal want change of guard and they feel that present Chief Minister ditched him after securing the seat from Ganderbal in 2008. “We want change. We will accept any government other than that present one. Let us hope for the best and we are sure that the new government will address our problems,” a group of people present outside the polling station said.
