The highway connecting Ladakh region with Kashmir, reopened Saturday after remaining closed since December last year due to accumulation of snow.

The highway was closed following snowfall and slipper road condition. Though the roads project BEACON had announced to reopen the strategically important road a month earlier, but late snowfall in March delayed the snow clearance operation.

However, the snow has been cleared by the BEACON by pressing into service sophisticated machine and men. People travelling on the highway will have the experience to see huge walls of snow on both sides of the road, including Zojila pass.

The Union Government has already approved construction of a tunnel at the Zojila to make it all weather road as road from Kargil-Leh remain closed for almost entire area.

It is the portion between Sronamarg to Drass, the second coldest place in the world on the 434-km-long highway which remained closed due to snow.

Officials said traffic movement on this road shall be regulated as per instructions of the Transport Department.UNI BAS PR NS1234
