Police on Saturday recovered silver nitrate from a woman and detained her along with the husband outside International Airport here in summer capital Srinagar.

Official sources told GNS that during security check, police recovered 25 grams of Silver nitrate from Shazia Akhar, wife of Showkat Ahmad, who hail from Chattabal in outskirts of Old City here.

“The couple was scheduled to leave for Delhi in an Indian Airlines plane. But, during routine checking, the frisking machine detected silver nitrate in the pouch of Shazia,” they said.

Sources said soon after the detection of the silver nitrate, the couple was immediately taken into custody and were shifted to Joint Interrogation Centre (JIC) Humhama for questioning.

An expert told GNS: “The silver nitrate can be used as an oxidizing agent and it is very costly,” adding it can also be used in photography as well as medicine.

“The police have taken a serious note of the incident and a top level officer of DIG rank is questioning the couple,” they said.
