A village representative saved by locals after he was allegedly abducted by a group of unidentified gunmen from one of his relatives house at Behri Baldan area of South Kashmir’s Shopian district.

Local sources said that few unidentified gunmen abducted Sarpanch Muzaffar Hajam from the house of his relative. As the gunmen took the Sarpanch along on gun point, the local population reportedly followed the masked gunmen who according to locals were repeatedly directing the people to return to their houses.

Reports said that succumbing to the public pressure, gunmen freed the Sarpanch.

SP Shopian Showkat Hussain told CNS that it was not ascertained who, when and why the Sarpanch was abducted. “For police it is still a rumour and we have not found something concrete which could establish the claims of the Sarpanch and the locals,” he said.
