Amid heavy rains, massive protests rocked Kashmir University on Wednesday following the arrest of a student of English Department by police.

Identified as Muzamil Farooq Dar, a resident of Kakapora tehsil of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, he, according to protesting students, was arrested by Police when they raided his rental residence at Sadrabal area outside Kashmir University on Monday night.

Eyewitnesses told CNS that hundreds of students from different departments amid anti-government and anti-India slogans marching through lanes of the campus halted at different departments urging students to boycott the classes.

“Students boycotted the classes and there was no class work in any department of the varsity,” said a group of students. The angry students locked administration block forcing the officials to get trapped in their respective offices. The students also locked the Sir Syed Gate.

Reports said that the police managed to break the lock of administration block only after five in the evening, till then the officials were holed up there.

Scores of people belonging to media houses were barred from covering the protest march and were not allowed to enter into University premises.

The students demanded immediate release of the arrested student and threatened to launch an agitation in case he is not released immediately.

“The arrest of innocent Muzamil would jeopardize his career and his family had to suffer because of the harassment,” said the protesting students.
