Police Tuesday arrested a Sarpanch and have launched a hunt to nab his two sons for allegedly assaulting an elderly woman who is battling for life in SK Institute of Medical Sciences Soura.

Police sources told CNS that Sarpanch Asham Sonawari in District Bandipora identified as Ghulam Nabi Anbar and his two sons Fayaz Anbar and Mushtaq Anbar attacked an elderly woman during a scuffle between two families. The incident occurred after a poplar tree during the process of hacking damaged some fruit-laden trees of one Abdul Qayoom Bhat. The Sarpanch and his sons reportedly lost their cool and attacked Qayoom and his mother after they raised objection about the wanton cutting of poplar trees.

Sources added that the elderly woman was seriously injured after she was ‘brutally’ beaten by the two sons of Sarpanch. She according to police has been shifted to SKIMS.

“We have arrested the Sarpanch while hunt is on to nab his two sons who are still at large,” a police official said adding that a formal case vide FIR number 91/2014 has been registered against the Sarpanch and his two sons.
