SRINAGAR

Moments after state Education Minister and PDP Spokesperson Naeem Akhter said separatists “must not to cross Lakshman rekha”, JK PDP chief and MP South Kashmir Mehbooba Mufti defended release of senior Hurriyat leader Masarat Alam Bhat in March last and said that there was “nothing wrong” in it.

In an interview to a New Delhi based News Channel to be telecast on Saturday late evening, daughter of JK CM said, “The party was only upholding a Supreme Court order by freeing the separatist.”

Pertinent to mention here, Masarat Alam has been detained again by slapping PSA on him and has been shifted to Kotbalwal jail post Hurriyat (G) rally on April 15. An FIR registered against him, Geelani and Pir Saif Ullah say that they waived “Pakistani Flag” and chanted “pro-Pakistan” slogans.

When asked that Masarat chanted pro-Pakistan slogans in Srinagar on the eve of Syed Ali Geelani’s return from New Delhi, Mehbooba replied, “if the law demands release we will do that and if it demands arrest of any, we will do that, too.”

She added, “Masarat was posing a threat to nation by making anti-national comments and we arrested him.”

“You pick up Number 28 on the list and hang Afzal Guru and say it is Supreme Court judgement but when the same SC says the release of Alam who is being held without charge you question it,” she said.

Asserting that PDP-BJP alliance was driven by the mandate, she said that there should not be “double standards” over court judgements.

Answering questions over Masarat’s release, Mehbooba said, “Alam can’t be kept in jail now after Supreme Court dismissed his case.”

“60 per cent of people voted for us in the elections because they trusted us,” she maintained.
