Though the poll process culminated peacefully, yet the month of December in Kashmir witnessed a surge in violence leaving 32 persons dead. The dead included 15 militants, 9 Army personnel, 3 policemen, one CRPF jawan and four civilians. Suspected militant also made two unsuccessful attempts on the lives of two political activists during the current month.

On the very first day of the current month, a village headman and a PDP activist, Sheeraz Ahmed was critically injured when gunmen fired upon him at Sogun hamlet in South Kashmir’s Shopian district. The next day according to CNS six militants and a Junior Commissioned Officer of Army were killed and three soldiers injured in an encounter at Line of Control in Nowgam Sector of North Kashmir’s Handwara town. On the very next on December 3, a CRPF Sub-Inspector Shamsher Singh was killed in militant attack at Pohu Pulwama.

December 5 turned out to be a bloody Friday as on that day in multiple attacks two days ahead of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Srinagar, militants in an audacious attack stormed an Army camp in Uri in Baramulla district, killing 11 security personnel, including a Lieutenant Colonel, and targeted a police party in Shopian, hurled grenade on a cavalcade of an Independent candidate in restive Tral resulting in the death of three civilians while two top LeT commanders were killed in an encounter in the outskirts of Soura area of Srinagar city.

On December 8, unknown gunmen abducted Haigam Sopore Sarpanch Beedar Sahab and shot him dead later on in Sopore town while a militant was killed in an encounter at Salkote Kupwara on December 18.

The year 2014 has so far consumed 219 lives in Kashmir. All such deaths occurred in different militancy related incidents. The dead included 105 militants, 51 civilians, 39 Army personnel, 17 policemen, 4 BSF personnel and 2 CRPF jawans.
