Syed-Ali-Geelani-Shabir-Shah-Nayeem-Khan

In a major development in separatist camp in Jammu and Kashmir, Hurriyat patriarch, and chairperson of his faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Geelani restructured Hurriyat (g) on Wednesday.

Breakaway group of Hurriyat led by peacenik Mirwaiz Umar Farooq who later formed their own faction of Hurriyat (Hurriyat-JK) including Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Khan, Aga Syed Hassan and Muhammad Yusuf Naqash have been given important positions in the new restructuring of Hurriyat (g).

Shah, Khan, Hassan and others recently joined Geelani after Hurriyat (JK) faced “internal crisis”.

Formed in 1992, All Parties Hurriyat Conference faced division in 2002 when Geelani alleged that some of its members covertly supported unionist assembly elections then.

Hurriyat (g) is a amalgam of over a dozen separatist groups including: Democratic Freedom Party, People’s League, Kashmir Freedom Party, Mass Movement, Anjuman Share-i-Shia, Jammu Kashmir Employees Movement, National Front, Tehreek-e-Khawateen Kashmir, Insaaf Party, Democratic Political Movement, People’s Political League, People’s Freedom League, Tehreek-e-Wahadat-i-Islami, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Tehreek-e-Mazahamat, Muslim League, Kashmir Freedom Front and Islamic Political Party.

This major restructuring is happening for the first time since 2002 and has been done under Article 20 of Hurriyat Conference Constitution.

In a meeting which was held at office-cum-residence of octogenarian Hurriyat chairperson, the constituents decided to elect Geelani as lifetime head of the Hurriyat faction.

After parting ways from Jama’at-e-Islami, Geelani formed Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, which is a major constituent of Hurriyat (g), now.

Speaking to Kashmir Life, a Hurriyat (g) activist said, Shabir Shah has been appointed as new Secretary General. He replaced Gh Nabi Sumji. Sumji heads his faction of Muslim Conference.

Shah, who heads Democratic Freedom Party (DFP), will be assisted by Sumji and incarcerated Masarat Alam Bhat. Masarat heads Muslim League.

Nayeem Ahmad Khan, who heads National front, shall head Jammu province while Shahid Saleem will be his assistant.

Prominent Shia leader and head of Anjuman-i-Sharia Shiyaan, Aga Syed Hassan shall be heading Ladakh province of Jammu and Kashmir.

Hurriyat has formed a public relations bureau which will oversee issues of political and societal nature. It will be headed by Aga Syed Hassan, Altaf Shah besides others.

In addition to his other responsibilities, Altaf Shah has been appointed as Hurriyat (g) chief organizer.

The Human Rights Committee shall comprise of Anjum Zamrooda Habib, Muhammad Yusuf Naqash and Bilal Siddiqi.

Ayaz Akbar shall continue as head of Media and Information department of Hurriyat (g) and will be assisted by Gh Ahmad Gulzar of Insaaf Party and Hakeem Rashid.

Mohammad Shafi Reshi has been appointed as head of the Legal Committee (Legal Cell) while as Bashir Ahmad Andrabi, Mohammad Yaseen Attaai and Devender Singh Bhail are appointed as members of the committee.

Ghulam Mohammad Khan Sopori is new head of the committee for public contacts while as Nisar Hussain Rather is his deputy.

Notably, Geelani’s long-time associate and Secretary General of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai, Shabir Shah and Ayaz Akbar continue to remain under police detention.

Interestingly, while regrouping of Hurriyat (g) was in process at Hyderpora, Hurriyat (m) delegation including Shahid-Ul-Islam and Javaid Ahmad Mir visited incarcerated Shabir Shah at Rajbagh Police Station today.
