Kashmir for Theatre

Shakespeare’s Hamlet has Kashmir finders and on Saturday, Theatre for Kashmir, will present its Kashmiri adaptation at SP College Srinagar.

Titled ‘Uff ti Karakh Na!’, this adaptation is a contemporary take of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy  and is weaved around indecisiveness of the protagonist who ultimately may or may not reach a decision. “To be or not to be” of Hamlet manifests into “meoun assun ya ne assun” of Hamza who is caught in a ‘catch 22’ situation and ultimately ‘may find its expression at a sub conscious level, a statement issued by the Theatre group said Friday evening.

The show will start at 5 pm at the historic SP college auditorium. Tickets @ RS 100 for the theatre play are available at the venue and will be provided on first-cum-first serve basis.

‘Uff ti Karakh Na?’ has been designed and directed by noted playwright and theatre director Arshad Mushtaq whose earlier plays ‘Su Yee’ (He will Come), ‘Bea Chus Shahid’ (I am the Witness) among others have been well received by critics and audience alike.

Theatre for Kashmir having presented various productions like ‘Wattepaed’ (Footprints), ‘Aalav’ (The Call) across the various venues over last decade,  has been part of numerous international theatre festivals taking Kashmiri theatre to new audiences across South Asia apart from conducting educational theatre workshops and seminars over the years.

“This adaptation has already generated interest among the students of literature as this classic text of Shakespeare is a part of the curriculum at the University level,” the statement maintained.
