A rifle snatching bid was averted by J&K Police cops on Wednesday late evening in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.

Sources said that suspected militants in an unsuccessful rifle snatching bid opened fire in Sheikhar area of Rajpora assembly constituency.

“Three-four militants attempted to enter the residence of Syed Bashir, ex-MLA Rajpora,” sources said, “however, the front gate of the house was closed and they could not enter it.”

Son of Syed Bashir was present in his home when the incident happened.

“The unusual movement got guarding cops alerted,” sources said, “but the militants opened fire which was retaliated by the cops forcing them to flee.” There were no reports of any injuries, so far.

At least four J&K Police cops man the residence of former Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker.

Local sources from the area told Kashmir Life that incident took place around 8:10 PM. “Firing continued for several minutes and people though an encounter had started,” a local from the area said, “soon whole area went dark as lights were shut suddenly.”

Early in the day, a weapon of an SPO guarding a former MLC was snatched in Shopian.
