Coronation Street star Marc Anwar has been “sacked” by the soap after an astonishing “racist attack on Indian people”.
However, after action by his company, Anwar apologised tweeting he did not mean to hurt any race or religion. But he stood by his comments that civilian killings in Kashmir makes him sad.
The Pakistan-born British actor – TV’s love cheat Sharif Nazir – branded Indians “b*****ds” and “p**s-drinking c**ts”.
Anwar, 60, fired off a series of tweets, some of which he later deleted, he referred to “Indians as killers and suggested Pakistanis should refuse to work in the country”.
It was London based, The Sunday Mirror, which contacted ITV chiefs about such development following which Anwar was sacked within hours.
Marc Anwar, 60, joined Coronation Street, the world’s longest-running TV soap opera, in 2014 as a member of the show’s first Muslim Family in which he played Sharif Nazir.
ITV said in a statement: “We are deeply shocked by the entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc Anwar. We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect.”
The actor, who has also appeared in a string of films including Captain Phillips and 51st State, posted the comments on Friday.
Anwar’s Twitter posts hit out at India over the Kashmir dispute and suggested Pakistani actors should refuse to work in the country. “Indians killing our Kashmir brothers and sisters,” he wrote.
“On Friday evening I saw, on the news, children being pulled out of rubble, people being pelted with pellets, women mourning their dead in Kashmir.
This upset me very deeply and in a moment of madness I ranted out. I vented my anger,” he said in his apology those “hurt” by his words used in his tweets.
“Again, the language that I used, I sincerely apologise for. But my feelings were very sincere for the people of Kashmir.
And I hope that everyone that I have offended can find it in their hearts to forgive me,” he added.
Troubled Himalayan region, Kashmir is witnessing a civilian rage against the establishment and is witnessing complete shutdown and curfew for last eighty (80) consecutive days during which at least 89 civilians were killed and as many as 13500 injured by forces..
He did the right thing. People over the world need to know about the Indian atrocities in Kashmir. Their killings are heavily nauseating.
