Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry Friday strongly condemned the telecom service providers for billing the consumers for services not provided to them for 20 days when the services including internet services were disconnected.

The Chamber called this act of service providers “akin to blackmailing the consumers”.

“More so, their threatening them of disconnecting their services for not depositing the bills for the above referred period for which the consumers cannot, in anyway, be held responsible,” a statement issued by KCC&I said this afternoon.

“On the contrary, the suspension of telecom services by the service providers caused untold miseries on the people as they got totally disconnected with their kith and kin within and outside the State,” the statement said.

“The Chamber holds the telecom companies responsible for failing to provide connectivity at a time when it was most needed. As such the Chamber demands that instead of raising the bills on the consumers the Telecom Companies should indemnify the consumers for their trauma and mental agony and for the economic losses suffered due to suspension of services,” the statement added.

The Kashmir Chamber of Commerce & Industry warns telecom companies to withdraw the unjustified bills forthwith failing which legal and other appropriate action will be initiated against them, it said.

The Chamber, in the meantime, raised the matter of granting of extensions for filing of Income Tax Returns and VAT Returns & taxes with the concerned authorities. The Extension till 31st of August in case of VAT has been issued.
