At least five youths were injured on Thursday evening by pellets when forces resorted to shelling on a rally which was on way to Hurriyat patriarch Syed Ali Geelani’s residence.

Local eye witnesses said that a rally of around 4000 people was on way to Tehreek-e-Hurriyat head office at Hyderpora when police intercepted them at Gulshan Abad Hyderpora.

People had come from Narakara, Galwanpora, Gurteng Gulshan and other areas to listen to Geelani.

Notably, hundreds of people would come to Hyderpora for last several days and would march peacefully on International Airport Road. Geelani, who has been caged in his home since he returned from New Delhi, would address people consisting mainly of women.

“People would march peacefully and manage traffic on their own,” a local said, “hundreds would come and go home without any disturbance.”

“But, today police had made it clear not to allow people to reach Hyderpora,” a local claimed, “so police intercepted the rally at Gulshan Abad when it started shelling on the people.”

This led to stone pelting and tear gas shelling, the eye witnesses said. “Women were leading the rally,” they said, “but police even didn’t stop from tear gassing.”

The eye witnesses said that five youths have been rushed to SMHS where they are undergoing treatment this time.

Meanwhile, reports coming from North Kashmir’s Baramulla said that clashes and protests are going on in the town.
