A district leader of J&K’s largest socio-economic-politico party, Jama’at-e-Islami, was arrested by police in North Kashmir on Friday.

Sources in Jama’at told Kashmir Life that its district Bandipora chief (Amir-i-Zila) was arrested in Sumlar area today.

The detained leader was identified as Hafiz Muhammad Sikandar Malik, son of Abdul Gani, resident of Rampora Bandipora.

“Hafiz Sikandar lead Friday prayers in a Jamia Masjid in Bapora area of the district today,” sources said. He is in his early thirties. He leads Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid for many years now.

“The police personnel in civvies were waiting for him near Bapura, some one kilometer away from Sumlar, and as soon as he reached there, he was stopped and bundled away in a vehicle,” the sources added.

Hafiz Sikandar has been taken to police station Argam where he is currently lodged.

Meanwhile, reports said that a youth was also picked up in Plan area of Bandipora during clashes. He has been identified as Waseem Ahmad, a resident of Putushai village.

Earlier, intense clashes erupted in main Bandipora after a pro-freedom rally was stopped by men in uniform.

Meanwhile, Jama’at-e-Islami strongly condemned the arrest of Hafiz Muhammad Sikandar Malik.

“Police have illegally detained him at Police Post Brar Argam,” the statement said.

Jama’at strongly condemned this “undemocratic behaviour of police.”

“The authorities in Kashmir are leaving no stone unturned to harass people, without giving slightest consideration to any law. People are being detained and targeted merely as part of political vendetta,” the Jama’at said.
