Hundreds of men in uniform launched cordoned and search operation in the Old town parts of Sopore in north Kashmir on Wednesday.

Local reports said that Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) Baramulla head Abdul Gani Bhat @ Guroo was addressing people in Jamia Masjid Sopore and soon after he concluded his address to people, police, army and CRPF men launched massive search operation in the area.

“But people came out in protest and clashes erupted between forces and locals,” reports said.

Jamia Qadeem, Chan Khan, Fish Market, Ninglee, and other adjoining areas are under cordon, reports said, “search operation is going on.”

Restrictions have been placed in the town and the movement of vehicles has been barred, reports added.

Court has issued arrest warrant against Guroo but he has been evading arrest. Forces raided his home many a times and the family alleged that their personal property was damaged including a band-saw mill. He is in his early 60s.

Meanwhile, police allegedly took away camera of a scribe working with a TV channel.

“My camera was snatched by police after I was covering the situation in the Main Chowk Sopore,” said Mohammad Younis, cameraman working the Gulistan channel.
