Congress high command on Friday constituted a screening committee for initiating the selection process of candidates for the jammu and Kashmir assembly elections to be held later this year.

Sources said that Ajay Maken has been made the Screening Committee Chairmen who has been assigned the selection of candidates.

They added that the panel was approved by Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

The other members of the panel are Shubhankar Sarkar, AICC General Secretary incharge Ambika Soni, CLP leader of J and K Assembly and PCC President Saifuddin Soz.

Sources said that Congress High Command also constituted same kind of committees for Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand. These states also are going for polls later this year.

After decided not to go for any pre-poll alliances National Conference and Congress have started the process of nominating their candidates. National Conference has already issued its two lists.

Opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has declared all its candidates for Kashmir valley barring Wacchi, Batamalo and Baramulla. The party has also nominated its candidates for most of the assembly segments of Jammu region.
