With the directions of the Supreme Court the government on Monday constituted a committee to monitor and examine the formation of State policy on Transgenders.

According to Kashmir News Service (KNS) correspondent the government order 927 GAD of 2014 Dated 01 09 2014 reads “In compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India issued in the Writ Petition (Civil) No. 400/2012 titled National Legal Services Authority V/s Union of India and Others, sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a committee, comprising the following., to monitor and examine the formulation of State Policy on Transgenders.

According to KNS correspondent the Supreme Court in its judgment had directed the Centre and state governments to take steps for framing various social welfare schemes for betterment of transgender persons, take proper measures to provide medical care, hospital and others. “Transgenders are also citizens of India and they must be provided equal opportunity to grow. The spirit of the Constitution is to provide equal opportunity to every citizen to grow and attain their potential, irrespective of caste, religion or gender,” the court had said,

The Supreme Court had also asked the state governments to treat them in line with other minorities officially categorized as socially and economically backward, to enable them to get quotas in jobs and education.

One of the state government official told KNS that the expert committee constituted by Supreme Court has recommended a state level authority duly designated or constituted by the respective states/UTs on the lines of Tamil Nadu Transgender Welfare Board.
The 12 member committee will be headed by chief secretary Mohammad Iqbal Khanday and the terms of the committee will be to frame policy to help the Transgender community lead a decent life and enable their mainstreaming into the society. “The committee will suggest adequate measures to be put in place for the welfare of Transgender community. It will also conducting survey of Transgender in the State through designated agencies/district administration,” officials said

They said that the committee will also mainstreaming of Transgender person within the general education system and inclusion of contents on Transgender in the curriculum of adolescent education in schools to sensitize children framing hospital policies on registration and admission of transgender people and training and sensitization people and their health issues, improving access to and use of gender transition related health services for Transgender people.
