Clashes erupted between government forces and protesters after Friday prayers in old town area of Sopore, Maisuma and Nowhatta.

Soon after Friday congregational prayers hundreds of people took to streets and started marching towards main market raising massive ‘pro freedom’ and ‘anti India slogans’.

Government forces, who were already deployed on spot, stopped the rally from proceeding which resulted in massive clashes, witnesses said.

“Forces used teargas shells, sound grenades and stun grenades to control the protestors,” said an eyewitness.

Till the last reports came in clashes were going on but no reports of any injury were received.

Clashes were also reported from uptown Maisuma where Joint resistance leadership members were protesting. The clashes were also reported from Nowhatta in old city after Friday prayers and the protesters were raising ‘pro freedom’ slogans. The police lobbed shells to disperse the protestors.

Pertinently the joint resistance group had called for peaceful protests after Friday prayers.
