Driver of a Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sunday evening flee along with the weapon of latter’s security guard in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, officials told GNS.

They said the local BJP leader Gulzar Ahmad Nengroo, who is a resident of Prichoo in the district, had hired a Scorpio of  a person namely Shabir Ahmad Sofi and Sofi himself used to drive the vehicle for Nengroo.

However on last evening at around 8:30, Sofi snatched the rifle from BJP leader’s PSO and fled from the scene, officials said. The PSO of Nengroo has been identified as Manzoor Ahmad, who is a resident of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

Confirming the incident, the Superintendent of Police (SP) Pulwama, Tejindar Singh, said over phone that a case under FIR number 129/2015 under sections 379 RPC 7/25 30P Act, 3PU audience act has been registered and searches for the absconding driver is on.

The SP further said that the BJP leader, Nengroo, is currently at a police station. “The step has been taken for his safety. We don’t want that the absconder should attack him with rifle he snatched,” the SP added.

Meanwhile, a search and cordon operation was conducted by government forces in Tahab area of the district. Though, no one was arrested.

The driver, who fled with the rifle, is in his twenties and is a resident of Pulwama district
