After three tumultuous summers, banks operating across J&K are up and kicking. In the six months ending September 2011, their deposits – mostly CASA, have surged from Rs 45694.63 crores in March 2011 to Rs 48394.49 crores.
Their overall advances have increased from Rs 16252.04 crores to Rs 17280.51 crores and most of it – 10825.35 crores (more than 62%) – falls under mandatory priority sector. But the overall exposure in the state as a percentage to the deposits they are holding is gradually slipping. It nosedived from 45.74 percent in March 2010 to 40.68 percent in September 2010 and ended up at phenomenally low CDR of 35.57 percent in March 2011. Six months later, it is 35.71 percent.
Banks seem to be consolidating their pie in the market. Their branch network has increased from 1302 to 1357 in six months. And their cumulative NPA has marginally increased from Rs 793.39 crores in March 2011 to Rs 794.66 crores. It was at Rs 733.44 crores in March 2010. While the nationalized banks have reduced their NPA from Rs 308.82 crores to Rs 298.89 crores in six months, private banks have increased it from Rs 294.23 crores to Rs 317.05 crores. RRBs have reduced it phenomenally from Rs 46.29 crores to Rs 11.12 crores but the cooperative banks have witnessed the NPA going up from Rs 144.05 crores to Rs 167.60 crores.
