Rahul Gandhi Thursday said that suffering of Kashmiri people has made him sad. The scion of Congress party was addressing a gathering of saffron growers in the Pampore town on second day of his three-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir.

He said that his visits to Kashmir make him both happy and sad. “I am happy because this is the land of my ancestors,” he said. “But I am sad because you people have suffered a lot over the years.”

Rahul told the growers to improve the quality and yield of the saffron so that the world comes to know about Kashmiri saffron.

He termed the incumbent PDP-BJP coalition government of JK as “opportunistic coalition that does not want to help the people or bring back peace”. It was Congress-led UPA government that gave Rs 900 crore for self-help groups of women in the state. “We got the local youth employed,” he said. “We held Panchayat elections.”

Meanwhile, commuters and pedestrians complained about massive inconvenience today after authorities barred the moment of traffic through Kadlabal route resulting in traffic snarls in wake of Rahul’s visit. A beeline of vehicles was stranded at the Lasjan link road along the river Jhelum. Commuters alleged that the diversion has caused them immense problems as they couldn’t reach their offices.

Rahul visited JK yesterday, and soon after landing on Jammu Airport, he flew on a chopper to Poonch villagers near LoC to take the stock of things affected by shelling.
