As per the report, army is constructing a new fence on the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir, equipped with sensors, night-vision cameras, alarms, besides having weather-proof system.
“We have arrived at this new design after winter trials, and are going to put it in place in the Kashmir region,” Northern Army Commander Lt General D S Hooda was quoted having said. “The new fence will be of great help in improving our counter-infiltration posture and minimise infiltration from across the LoC.”
It is said that the step was taken after nearly 350km of the 400 km-long fence along LoC in Kashmir gets damaged every winter and has to be fixed in the summer.
As of now, the army hopes to finish fence construction in the next three years.
“The new design will have night-vision cameras, alarms and visual map displays integrated with the fence,” the report says. “All these will be linked to the nearby monitor room, giving the local military commanders real-time data so they can react promptly if an attempt is made to tamper with the fence.”
The army has also decided to light up the new fence in Kashmir using LEDs, the report says. “But the new fence will not lead to zero infiltration. This new design will definitely bring the numbers substantially down.”
Notably, army says, 2005 LoC fence—known as the Anti-Infiltration Obstacle System (AIOS)—has proved reasonably successful in checking infiltration into J&K.
Before zeroing in on the new fence design, report says, army tested three designs by constructing one-km long sample fences in Kupwara sector.
