NEW DELHI

The Union Government is constructing 11 new Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs) in Jammu and Kashmir, out which nine are nearing the stage of completion. This was stated by Minister for Human Resource Development Smriti Irani in Parliament on Monday, an official statement said.

The Minister was replying to a question by Member of Parliament GN Ratanpuri. The JNVs are coming up at Kupwara, Budgam, Kargil, Shopian, Rajouri, Poonch, Ganderbal, Doda, Reasi, Jammu-I and Samba.

Irani stated that almost 90 percent work has been completed at most of the places except Poonch and Kargil. She said the construction at Poonch, Reasi, Jammu-I and Samba has been delayed due to slow pace of work on the part of construction agencies, the statement said.

“The construction at Kupwara, Budgam, Ganderbal, Shopian, Rajouri, Doda and Kargil has been delayed due to difficult terrain and severe climatic conditions. Work in some of these areas was also affected due to law and orde problems,” the minister added.

Pertinently in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, five districts namely Srinagar, Bandipora, Ramban, Kishtwar and Pulwama do not have a JNV at the moment. J&K also has a total of 97 educationally backward blocks, for which 19 model schools have been approved as on date.

The Navodaya Vidyalaya Scheme envisages setting up one JNV in each district of the country. So far 598 JNVs have been sanctioned. Out of these, 588 JNVs are in operation covering 576 districts of the country.

Ratanpuri had enquired about the present status of construction of JNV buildings started more than two years ago in J&K. He also wanted to know the names of districts where no JNVs exist, and also targets and achievements in construction of model schools in educationally backwards blocks in the country.
